The thesis aims at studying principles and techniques of editing-translationapplied in the field of news reporting from the viewpoint of textual analysis.Chapter One generally describes the purpose of the thesis, the research methodand the language data. This thesis adopts the functional approaches to analyzeChinese to English news translation, which falls into the activity of cross-culturalcommunication and carries unique characteristics of journalese, not only from theangle of text typology and initiators, but also considering such factors as subject, object, carrier, and receiver of translation. The research method applied isdescriptive and qualitative in nature under the guidance of both translation theoriesand linguistics, and the language data collected are mostly from popular newspapersand websites.Chapter Two provides the theoretical framework of the study. Halliday'sTheme-Rheme theory is used to support techniques of editing- translation from themicro-view perspective in that Chinese sentences are radically different fromEnglish ones by basic structures. Sperber and Wilson's relevance theory, on themacro-view level, is presented to justify the rationality and necessity ofediting-translation techniques. The third part of Chapter Two, introducing majorpropositions brought forward by the Manipulation School, also proves thepracticability of editing-translation techniques from the angle of translator'sinitiatives.Chapter Three is the focus of the thesis. By selected example presentation, textual analysis, and inspired inferences, the four specific techniques—selectivetranslation, integrative translation, abstract translation, and interpretative translationare illustrated. The author also takes the liberty to induce the general principlesfollowed by editing- translators in practice.Chapter Four summarizes the thesis. The author tentatively cites the idea thattranslation can be regarded as a form of rewriting, which also emphasizes the activerole taken by the translator and the needs of the target audience. Limitations arepointed out, with suggestions on further research efforts.
