This thesis discusses the role played by Reception Theory in the translation of Classical Chinese Poetry. In the former translation theories, "author-centered" or "text-authored" theory dominates the field of translation theory. The readers' reception is ignored on one hand, the translator's strategies in translating according to the readers' reception is not considered. In 1960s of the 20th century, the birth of Reception Theory provided a new perspective on translation research. This thesis studies the translation of Classical Chinese Poetry (CCP) from the perspective of reception. Reception Theory redefines the role of the readers and comes forward with a series of concepts such as indeterminacy, concretization and fusion of horizon. It changes the text-centered theory into the reader-centered model. This literary theory has a great impact on the traditional translation theory. Classical Chinese Poetry stresses artistic conception and implicit meaning. On the base of the different versions of the poems, the thesis clarifies the role that is played by Reception Theory in translation to illustrate the importance of reception of the translator and English target readers. And it further explores some ways on how to translate the cultural elements in Classical Chinese Poetry. This thesis is composed of introduction and five chapters. Chapter one is about Reception Theory. Chapter two illustrates significance of reception theory on literary translation and briefly discusses translatability of Classical Chinese Poetry. Chapter three illustrates the role of Reception Theory in Classical Chinese Poetry translation.
