Augustus age was an important era in Rome empire. Under his control, the civil war ended and the times of peace and prosperity came. In order to consolidate the principate , Augustus made a correct assessment of the situation. He took concealed methods to promote reform gradually. In order to make his reform smooth going, Augustus took flexible measures to drew literary man over to his side with the help of cultural policy. The propaganda exerted an great influence on the people' s psychology. He gained the friendship and loyal of Virgil, Horace and Livy. They praised the past of Rome the glorious achievements of Augustus. They gave expression to the national aspirations for reforms. They aroused the Roman to re-energize the Rome nation.The cultural policy coordinate with other policy and made Augustus' s restoration succeeded. The politics was clear, the culture and the economy were flourished. On the other hand, the powerful economy boosted the development of the literature , art and other aspects.In a word, the cultural policy of Augustus stabilized Rome empire and promoted the peace of Rome. It make Roman recover from the turmoil and push the provinces forward. So his cultural policy was successful and had historical meaning. Thereformation of Augustus not only laid the foundation of the Rome empire, but also handed down some valuable experience. It deserved people to recollect and consult. This essay is divided into three parts:The first part is the preface, it' s a brief introduction about recent studies which are from domestic and overseas scholars about the issue and the purpose why it is written.The sencond one is main body of the essay. Three respects compose it. The first respect is the reasons of the cultural policy of Augustus . It falls into five sub-parts. They explain the reasons which made Augustus take the cultural policy from the administration, army, provinces , frontiers and finance. The sencond respect is the main content of the cultural policy of Augustus. It discusses the literature and the municipal works. The third respect is the relations between the cultural policy of Augustus and the prosperous of Rome empire. It falls into three sub-parts. The relations can be reflected from the flourished culture, the development of the cities and the prosperous economy.The last one is the conclusion . It sums up the cultural policy of Augustus briefly.
