This thesis studies Tess of the D'urbervilles from a point of painting by choosing environment and character from a horizontally section, and painting color's dynamic changing combined with tragedy motif and the destiny of characters from a vertical section. It describes the painting of nineteenth-century especially the English painting of landscape and expatiates the origin between Hardy and painting combined with the circumstance of Hardy's lifetime character of writing novel, experience and like of the author himself in the epilogue,in order to explain why his novel has so many painting features. This thesis is composed of three chapters:Chapter One: This chapter studies the painting feature in the depiction of environment, which embodies the painting feature most evidently. It has two parts to study, one part studies realistic style of painting in nature's depiction, which shows the influence of famous English painter of landscape,Turner;the other part studies impressionism style in the depiction of scene.,which is in the shadow of impressionism, Renoir and Monet. This chapter differentiates landscape from scene, not only to point the aesthetic feeling of picture in environment's depiction, but also to study Hardy how to use the painting technique of famous painting genre in the same age into the literature.Chapter Twe: This chapter studies the painting feature in the depiction of character, which also has deep aesthetic feeling of picture. It has three parts to study, the first part studies portraiture, which has adequately used elements of impressionism to embody character's noblest 'relievo'beauty;the second part sudies Hardy how to show character's feeling through the 'video' pictures;the last one studies Hardy how to use color symbol to hint people's character, and combine positive and negative characters with the color's symbolic meaning of white-black, which embodies the Hardy's understanding of color and ingenuity in character's constitution.Chapter three: this chapter studies the dynamic changing of the painting pictures.First, the 'red' color which has constantly appeared in the novel, points the death directly with its symbolic meaning. Second, incessant changing pictures evidently embodies the changing courses from bright to dark, from pleasure to grief through the changing in three aspects:season, landscape and people's color.
