Tentative Probing Into The Translation Of Cultural Differences In Fortress Besieged From The Perspective Of Reception Aesthetics

Under the tremendous influence of the source text-oriented theory, the principles and the related methods to deal with the cultural differences in literary works arose bountifully, but they didn't break away from the base of the source texts, thus putting translation into a predicament of discussing how the to transmit the cultural significance in the source texts more faithfully on the basis of the translatability of the original text and the readability of the translated versions.This paper, through a systematic retrospection and analysis of the traditional translation theories, tends to point out the inadequacies of the related theories in their guidance for the cultural difference translation.Reception Aesthetics finds new entrance and solutions for translation studies. After making a brief illustration of the formation of the theory, the paper mainly focuses on the close relationship between Reception Aesthetics and translation and the central concepts that can be applied to the treatment of the cultural differences in translation practices. Then, with Wolfgang Iser and Hans Robert Jauss' insightful concepts of reader's role and status and the fusion of horizons between the readers and the translated works, the author analyzes and evaluates the methods used to deal with cultural differences in Fortress Besieged, and draws the conclusion that though with some weak points, the translation of cultural differences in this work is successful from the perspective of Reception Aesthetics.Meanwhile, the author also states that, with the co-existence of multi-cultures as the predominant setting, the translation of cultural differences should attach importance to the consideration of the target language readers' role as receptors; the mission of translation is the fulfillment of cultural exchange.
