During Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty, the tribute trade between China and Japan came to an end,and the official diplomatic relationship ceased in its wake. Not until 1871 when Qing Government signed Sino-Japan Provisions of Cordial Relations with Mingzhi Government of Japan that formal Sino-Japan diplomatic relationship had been established. This paper is to analyse how Sino-Japan relations changed from 17th century to 18th century and explore the causes of it.The times of Late Ming and Early Qing was a transitional period for Sino-Japan relations. Before this period ,the main stream of Sino-Japan relations was being friendly and it was being strained from this period to 1972 when Sino-Japan relations had been restablished ,in which Sino-Japan War(1894-1895) and anti-Japanese war broke out.In 17th and 18th centuries, official diplomatic relationship between China and Japan had not been established.Although strained some time ,it went to smooth at last.Basing on history,we make a study of three things:the diplomatic policies of China and Japan in 17th and 18th centuries, the change of it and the reasons why Japan had been on the edge of the Tributary System for a long time.In that way,it is of great value for us to deeply explore the origin of Sino-Japan relations and to promote peaceful association of the two countries.Meanwhile,it can fill the vacancy of academic study for this problem. There are five parts in this paper as follows:The introduction relates three things: a review of academic achievements of Sino-Japan relations in 17th and 18th centuries;subjects of the paper sdudies;how Sino-Japan relations developed before 17th century.Chapter 1 discusses the Sino-Japan relations in late Ming Dynasty.Section 1 discusses that Ming Government adopted a fairly inflexible security policy; militarily,Ming built a coastal defense system in Northeast China for Japan;otherwise, the policy dealing with drifted people.Section 2 discusses Japan's efforts to return the Tribute trade system. In order to change the isolated diplomacy caused by the Korean War during 1590s,Tokugawa Shogunate made great efforts, but it came to failure because of the maritime embargo policy of Ming Dynasty.Chapter 2 discusses how Sino-Japan relations changed in early Qing Dynasty.Section 1 discusses the Sino-Japan relations before unification of Taiwan in which it was rather strained. Before the domination over China,Qing regime hoped to establish a friendly relationship with Japan. But Japan did not respond positively, because the prejudice of"Huayi"concept and the apprehension about Qing.Nevertheless,Japan payed close attention to the alternation of Ming and Qing. After Ming Dynasty ended,Japan kept touch with Nan-Ming regime and supplied it with military materials and even directly dispatched reinforcements.During"Sanfan"Rebellion period,Japan supported"Sanfan"and Taiwan.Section 2 discusses Sino-Japan relations from...
