Carved printing in China probably came into being in Tang Dynasty, became mature in the Five Dynasties, flourished in Song Dynasty . But the printing in Liangzhe area in Song Dynasty was unneglectable for the significant social value and the great attribution .YeMengde said:"the printing in Hang zhou is the best in the world, that in Sichuan comes second, and that in Fujian is the worst."Great numbers of block-printed scripts proved that the carved printings in Liangzhe area inherited the style of Ouyang who lived in Tang Dynasty.which were embodied by upright typefaces, skillful writing, gentle cutting, and elegant carving. The way of carving the calligraphy and painting is similar to the way of writing style of the Ouyangs, which created a picture of the harmony of the image and the writing. OuyangXun were the outstanding representatives of this time. Ouyang Xun was one of the four famous calligraphists in Tang Dynasty. His writing is upright, chubby but not overstaffed, lean but not skeletal. The well-developed style of the famous master not only had a great influence on the calligraphy of Tang Dynasty and the latter generations, but also promoted the improvement of carved printings in Liangzhe in Song and Yuan dynasties. The carved printing stepped into its"golden age"in Song Dynasties. Especially in Liangzhe area, the economy was highly developed, the publishing laborers were excessive, and the carved printing had formed its own particular style. Zhejiang and Hangzhou became the centre of carved printings in Song Dynasty. Most books that were collated by the Imperial Academy were carved here and were named"scripts of Zhe". Then these carved scripts were sent to Bianliang to print. The scripts of Zhe in Northern Song Dynasty were mostly engraved in Hangzhou, most of which were the scripts of the Imperial Academy. The carved printings in Southern Song Dynasty were mainly divided into two groups by Linan and Shaoxing governments. The north to Linan government was the west road of Liangzhe area, which went along Jiaxing, Huzhou, LinAn, Ming Zhou, Tonglu, QingYuan and so on. The south to Shaoxing government followed the route along Chu chou, WuZhou, QuZhou, KuoChang, Taizhou, Yan Zhou, Wenzhou and Pingzhou and so forth. The carved printings in Zhejiang in Song Dynasty were firstly written down by the copywriter carefully, then carved by the workers according to the writing style of the copy writer. The carved printings in northern.Song dynasty inherited the style of that in Five Dynasties, which were entirely the embodyment of Ouyang style. This style of carving was also carried on by the official printings in Sourthern Song Dynasty.
