A Study Of Characteristics Of Modernity On Fangjing's Works

Fang Jing, a famous Chinese poet and prose writer, began his writing career in the 1930s. He published 8 collections of poems in his life. However, people both abroad and at home paid little attention to the research over his poems, which is not compatible with his position in the history of new poetry. The article tries to put him in the background of Fang's living so as to conduct a diachronic and synchronic study on his poems. The article, which is divided into three sections, is also intended to give a full description of the characteristics of his works.The first section based on the three periods of his writing career argues that his poems possess the image of modernistic consciousness. Fang in his early writing period tried to express his inner loneliness and solitariness by means of the images that are closely related to body language such as kiss, smile, hand. The second period was the Chinese war time. So, he made efforts to express his inner feelings that were closely related to the social reality. That is to say, to some extent Fang's works in this period were imitating the reality, which thus made the characteristics of modernity weakened. Fang's third writing period started with the foundation of the People's Republic of China, in which he went back to his early writing style expressing new thoughts.Section two expounds the topics that are closely related to modernistic consciousness in Fang's works. Love and beauty, which surpass the secular ones and refer to loving human beings, loving living and loving life, are the logic starting points and destinations of his writings. Fang's early poems expressed his intellectual thought on the wide space and time. His masterpieces Four Collections of Poetic Prose are regarded as the classic thought over the universe.The last section, from the perspective of descriptive writing study, expounds the modernistic skills in his writing. The article, which draws on the western modernistic poetry theory such as dramatization, icon of drama, investigates descriptive components in Fang's works. That is, the article mainly investigates the following modernistic skills: the change of person, turning of perspectives, appearance and disappearance of narrator, which made the voice of narrator in Fang's works be heard clearly.
