Communication Strategies can help the learners to overcome knowledge limitations in four skills. For beginning and intermediate language learners ,these strategies may be among the most important .These strategies are useful when learners don't know an expression, when they don' t know how to keep up their conversation with others. The study investigates the spoken Chinese Communication Strategies of students of L2 Chinese by means of the Communication Strategies questionnaires and face-to-face interview.According to the Q1 and the Q2, the thesis describe the result of them, which we know the general situation of foreigners using the Communication Strategies when they are speaking Chinese with other students and Chinese people. The study also investigates two different students , one is American another is Japanese, in using Communication Strategies by means of recording their conversations with other students. And the thesis demonstrate the reason why they have so many difference. The study of Q1 and Q2 examine the effects of proficiency on the learners' use of Communication Strategies in their spoken Chinese .The main findings are as follows. The less proficient learners used more Communication Strategies than the more proficient learners. And the less proficient learners use more reduction strategies which includes topic avoidance and the message abandonment. And the more proficient learners use more L2-based Communication Strategies than the less proficient learners, such as approximation and word coinage and circumlocution. But there are also some limited evidence of proficiency-related effects on the other type of strategies, which includes the co-operative strategies and L1-based achievement strategies. The comparison research of the two learners reveal that the difference of their L1 and their cognitive styles result in their different behavior in using different strategies. Then the thesis describe seven types of strategies used, which aim to know the reason why they use that in the L2 acquisition. The study provide some important suggestions in teaching Chinese as a second language, which intended to improve the communicative competence of the learners.
