In current college teaching system, language teachers tend to put more stress on the cultivation of the linguistic competence than the pragmatic competence so as to make the students pass Band 4 and Band 6 tests. But this kind of teaching method lead to an undesirable result , that is the undergraduates have a good command of linguistic competence but lack of pragmatic competence, furthermore, they may find they can not communicate with the native speakers appropriately , which result in the pragmatic failure. This thesis aims to solve this problem by way of applying the foundational principles of pragmatics, which includes context theory, speech act theory and politeness principle, to the practices of College English Teaching. Based on the enlightenment of those principles to the teaching methods, the author proposes that it is necessary for the college English teachers to strengthen the input of the pragmatic knowledge; to create the real second language context; to improve the students' cross —cultural awareness ,and above all ,to introduce real task-based approach with the guidance of fundamental pragmatic theories mentioned above. Therefore, those teaching methods can help to develop college students' pragmatic competence.
