In recent years, Systemic-Functional Grammar has been employed to promote writing teaching throughout the world. However the most popular application has been the theory of cohesion. Contrastive rhetorical studies of Chinese students'writings using the three meta-functions of Systemic Functional Grammar are rare. This thesis is a practical application of SFG to exploring the differences in the physical linguistic variables as well as ability to make appropriate choice of vocabulary and grammar in different contexts between the shared topic writings of CET4 and CET6.In this study, Wordsmith was firstly used to compare these two data (60 writings) from the physical linguistic variables. The result indicates that CET6 writers show higher language proficiency from the perspective of word frequency, average word length and sentence length.Secondly, a three-dimension functional analysis (SFG) indicates that the differences in relational and verbal processes of the ideational function show that language objectivity of CET6 writings is more proper than in CET4 writings. That is, CET6 language appropriacy is better than CET4's.
