Autonomic learning has gained great popularity between researchers home and abroad since Holec first gave this definition in 1980. It is widely advocated by researchers now because it is closely related to life-long study and it is suitable to the more and more popular multi-media teaching settings. To enhance autonomic learning ability, strategy instruction is given to learners in many universities in China. Under this trend, the College English Center in Beijing Language and Culture University plans to give strategy instruction to non-English freshmen of Grade 2005. Here the present study will focus on the following questions:(1) What is the participants' autonomic ability and language proficiency when they just enter the university? Is there any relationship between freshmen's autonomic ability and their language proficiency?(2) Is there a distinct improvement of participants' autonomic ability after one semester's strategy instruction?(3) Is there a distinct change of participants' language proficiency at the end of the semester as compared with that at the beginning of the semester? After one semester's strategy instruction, the findings in the study are listed below:(1) The autonomic abilities of participants are fairly low. The correlational study shows that the autonomic ability has an influence on learners' language proficiency. Therefore it is imperative to enhance participants' autonomic abilities.(2) Strategy instruction in the present study really plays a positive role and enhances the participants' autonomic abilities.(3) Participants' language proficiencies have been greatly improved at the end of the semester compared to those at the beginning of the semester. To sum up, strategy instruction can enhance a learner's autonomic ability and language proficiency.
