Content: The Catcher in the Rye is generally acknowledged as a modern classic.It is very popular with large public, especially with youngsters and it becomes point at issue by researchers.This dissertation adopts the way of scrutinizing text and applies the Double Association Perspective of Personality Construction, analyses the growing process of the leading character Holden and the subsidiary people.Then it reveals the universal meaning of the works.It consists of five parts.Introduction: This part is concerned with the theme of the novel, different annotations about the novel, the studying train of the dissertation and the process of creating Holden by Salinger.Part one: This part describes the adult world which is phony and alien.It applies the Double Association Perspective of Personality Construction to analyse how Holden deals with the relationship between himself and the adult world and the children world.It analyses his two methods of rebellion against the adult world and the attempts of obedience to the world.Then it expounds the situation that he can't get back to the children world and get into the adult world completely.Part two: This part analyses three stages of Holden's mental process which is promoted by rebellion and obedience elements in his mind. In the first stage, he plays his hope on the pure children world and constructs the Utopia of himself in his mind and wants to be the catcher in the rye and the god who creats a world. In the second stage, he talks with Mr.Antolini.Then he feels the hardships of his growing and the importance of his obligation. So he constructs the Arcadia of himself in his mind and wants to be a leisurely and carefree hermit and a person who isolates himself from society. In the third stage, with Phoebe's help, he gives up the plan which is leaving for the west and grasps the method of keeping watch children.
