In recent years, many researchers have been interested in the writing process rather than the writing product. It has been argued that the expectations of traditional L2 writing classroom can be problematic for Chinese students, particularly in the area of argumentation and critical thinking. Chinese English learners always take writing skills into account when they learn English. Actually, writing is a very important part for Chinese EFL learners. The topic of this paper is factors influencing the writing skills of Chinese English learners. Our intention is to analyze writing patterns of Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) learner.This essay first (Chapter 1) looks into the theories of Kaplan. Kaplan (1966) was the first author to develop a deterministic hypothesis, suggesting that people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds organize discourse differently, as a reflection of their native language and culture. Since then, numerous authors (e.g. , Hing,1993; Mohan & Lo, 1985; Yu, 1996; Wang, 1994) have explained the influence of cultural thinking patterns on the world views, values, behaviors, and language use of ESL/EFL Learners. After introductions and the literature review, a case study will be researched from linguistic, pragmatic, and psycholinguistic perspectives.The researcher aims to shed some light on some heuristic research questions with respect to the Chinese EFL student in this qualitative study.1.What linguistic patterns are found by the American teacher in the Chinese EFL learner's essays?2. How are underlying cultural thinking and discourse patterns revealed in the linguistic aspects of the Chinese EFL learner's essays?3. How does instructional feedback provided by the American teachers compare to the Chinese English instructor's feedback and to the researcher's psycholinguistic analysis of the same Chinese EFL learner's essays?In additions, the researcher conducted deeper linguistic analyses of discourse organization and cultural thinking styles.
