Ernest Hemingway is one of the most influential American writers in the 20th century. His legendary life story has already become an essential part of his artistic creation, from which a unique tragic hero typical of Hemingway was created. His hero, also called "code hero", has become part of American culture. In fact, the image of the code hero is built on the original force of modern man facing the difficult living circumstances and it shows us what attitude towards the difficulties we should take. Hemingway says, man can be destroyed but not defeated, and he should demonstrate grace under pressure. This spirit is an important mechanism of modern literary tragedy, and this attitude is what modem man should adopt to face the adverse living conditions and develop his ethic values. In view of the importance of the code hero in Hemingway's works, this thesis intends to make a detailed study of it. And I would approach the subject from four aspects: the development of the image of the code hero, his basic qualities, his formation and significance. The thesis consists of six parts. The first part gives a general introduction to Hemingway and his works, and the Hemingway code hero. The second part deals with the source of the code hero and the development of its portrayal. Hemingway himself is just a code hero, and his personal experience is the source of the creation of the code hero. With the enrichment of his life experience, his outlook of life develops, and his ideas guiding literary creation and his portrayal of the code hero have developed consequently. The third part makes an analysis of the characteristics of the code hero based on Hemingway's point of view of life and death. Only in the presence of death will the code hero display his grace under pressure. The fourth part discusses the causes of the successful creation of the code hero, which includes the affective power of the tragic art, the female characters used as foils, and Hemingway's unique language style and his "iceberg" theory. The fifth part deals with the significance and limitations of the code hero.
