| The authoress of this thesis, regarding translation of Chinese culture-bound terms as a bridge for international communication and as a means of introducing Chinese cultures, presents a panoramic view in this field of study in terms of various definition of culture.In the latter period of 1980's, cultural studied and cultural criticism flourished in the western academic circles. So many theorists have long studied translation in the theoretical perspective of cultural studies, then a new school came into being in the field of tranlation: cultural Translation Theory .It is also called that translation study takes a cultural turn.The argument roots in the inevitable contradictions and difficulties arising in the process of cultural translating and is caused by the differences between translatability and untranslatability. They are one pair of paradoxes in translation. As people understand and study language and translation constantly, they have become less one-side in stressing the possibility or impossibility of translation, and shown a more sensible and practical attitude. On the one hand, language should be translatable. Language is the carrier of cultures as well as the tool of expressing ideas. Cultures and ideas can be understood and exchanged with each other. On the other hand, owing to the regional differences in cultural tradition, language structure and thinking model, sometimes culture is not completely translatable, and it is even untranslatable. To all above questions mentioned, authoress offers how to take a positive perspective on cultural translating and how to cope with it. And draw a conclusion, we should reali2e that both translatability and untranslatability are relative. Either of them is not a static result, but a transformable dynamic process. With the development of society, the enlarging and deepening of cultural exchange and translators' efforts, untranslatability can be transformed into translatability.
