Crowned as "Canada's most beloved author", Lucy Maud Montgomery is renowned for her novels, short stories, journals and so on, among which her Anne series, especially her first book Anne of Green Gables, is the most popular. This thesis focuses on the reception of the novel among various readers and in different fields. It is composed of four chapters. Chapter One is an introduction to Montgomery's life and work, and to the changes in critical assessment of her Anne of Green Gables. Resorting to Reception Theory, Chapter Two discusses the diverse interpretations, particularly the reception of the novel among feminists and the Japanese. Chapter Three introduces theories of high culture and popular culture, and analyzes Anne's popularity in both fields. Chapter Four is a conclusion. It points out that the significance of Anne of Green Gables lies in its capability of appealing to readers at various levels and in different fields, and this will play a prominent role in promoting today's literary creation and assessment.
