Learner autonomy refers to students'ability to take charge of their own learning. In the 1950s, learner autonomy became an important research subject in the field of educational psychology. It was Henri Holec who introduced the concept into the field of foreign language teaching in the 1980s. In recent years, learner autonomy has been a hot issue in the field of applied linguistics and it will be a new trend in the future foreign language teaching. Much has been done on learner autonomy both at home and abroad. However, this research focuses on the general situation of students'awareness of learner autonomy and the comparisons between students'awareness of learner autonomy in the public university and private university in China.In this study, a survey was made through a questionnaire about students'awareness of learner autonomy in Jiangsu University of Science & Technology and Nanxu College in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province. This study was to gain a better understanding of the general situation of college students'awareness of learner autonomy,try to find out the differences between students'awareness of learner autonomy in the public university and private university and reveal the correlation between the students'awareness of learner autonomy and their English performance. The following are the major findings of this study based on the theory of constructivism.(1) Most Chinese college English learners are not against the concept of"learner autonomy"; they are ready to accept it. They are not willing to rely on their teachers completely. In their views, their English learning performance depends on their own efforts. On the one hand, students respect their teachers; on the other hand, they would rather that the teacher didn't control the classroom activities.(2) Traditional teaching beliefs still have great influence on students'awareness of English learner autonomy. Chinese students grow up in the context of traditional Chinese culture. Students have been told to obey their teachers and parents since childhood, so they almost and always obey their teachers.
