Today, the art of Erhu performance has reached a very high level of development. Last changes have been made in the relationship between the erhu and society, as well as in the content and form of erhu musical pieces. This work will attempt to investigate this through two important techniques in erhu playing: bowing and vibrato. It will also use various examples of erhu musical pieces (both original and adapted) from the 1980s onwards, as well as 22 bowing techniques and 8 vibrato methods to further illustrate and explain their uses and characteristics. The correct use of these techniques will give a significant boost to the artistry of the performance. These techniques have a decisive influence on the timbre and sound produced; they can also demonstrate the different understanding and artistic handling characteristics of different performers to the same song. In addition, a performer can also produce different musical styles by varying the bowing and vibrato techniques. Therefore, these two techniques are very important to erhu performance. Lastly, I personally believe that the art of erhu performance will once again shine with previous unsurpassed glory in 21st-century today.
