The Fundraising letter writing is an important part of persuasive writing, for it persuades people to donate money, which is considered as people's most precious and valuable thing. Nowadays, as fundraising is one of the fastest and useful ways to help those people who are facing difficulties and it also offers donators opportunities to show their sympathy and love, fundraising letters have become more and more popular and common. In addition, fundraising letters are a kind of genre according to Swale's definition of genre.The present study is specific by combining genre analysis and contrastive rhetoric together to conduct a contrastive study on English and Chinese Fundraising letters. Although some scholars (Bhatia, 1998; Upton, 2001) have done related genre analysis on English fundraising letters, the data are just from non-profit organizations, and those written by individuals are ignored. Concerning Chinese fundraising letters, no one has ever touched upon, and to say nothing of a contrastive analysis of English and Chinese fundraising letters cross-culturally. Therefore, the present study aims to fill these gaps.30 English fundraising letters and 30 Chinese fundraising letters are collected from the internet, the author's friends and some universities. The present contrastive study is conducted on both macro-level and micro-level. On the macro-level, genre analysis is adopted to display the structure of English and Chinese fundraising letters respectively based on Swales' move analysis and Hasan's GSP; on the micro-level, linguistic rhetoric of every move in English and Chinese tundraising letters is analyzed, and the way to request is emphasized on for it is the most essential part in a fundraising letter; the usages of personal pronouns are also found out in both English and Chinese fundraising letters.
