The study of Chinese populistic ideology has many results now. In the region of literature, the results concentrate on two aspects. One is macro-analysis on the relationship of theory of literature and art and populism. The other is concrete study on writers, like Li Dazhao, Ba Jin or Zhu Ziqing. But no one has maken a systematic study on Lao She' populism ideology. Part 1 explains what is populism. Though populism doesn't have a unified concept, it has some essential features. So this part will explain four essential features of populism. Part 2 will explain what is Chinese populism. First, Mohism tradition and counterculture supply ideological basis for introduction of populism. Second, Chinese national crisis and modernized process are the major realistic base that Chinese populism can produce. Third, Chinese populism is blending with other ideologies, like anarchism, democratic ideology . This part is the actual background of Lao She's accepting populism.Chapter 2 is about the relationship of Lao She and populism. Part1 is Lao She's populace identity Which decides the particularity of the way that Lao She accepts populism. Part 2 to 4 expounds the specific expression of Lao She' s populism ideology in literary works. Part 2 is about the criticizing capitalist morals. Part 3 is about the tendency to nongovernmental concept of value and the populace. Part 4 is about knowledge and education, which reflect the tendency to counterculture of Lao She.Chapter 3 is about the characteristics and limitations of Lao She's populism ideology. It discusses the limits on ideological concept and concept of value which come from populism. All of the limits are expressed in such ways: 1, to prettify the townspeople at the bottom of society; 2, to reject the new townspeople's culture; 3, to criticize the intelligentsia and upper classes of society; 4,to oppose modernization; 5, practical thinking that leads the thought of saving the nation by getting right on the job . Part 2 discusses the characteristics and limitations on the literary and artistic creation of Lao She which have much to do with the populism ideology of Lao She. We also discuss three aspects: 1, the range of subjects is always the bottom of society; 2, the figure of townspeople and the ideal characters; 3, the characteristics and limitations of artistic skills.
