Maurice Ravel is a famous French musician in the early 20th century. Although respected, as well as Debussy, as the important representative of Impressionism Music, he is famed for his own trenchant personality and creativity. He does not simply constrain his work within the scope of impressionism but creates pieces of work of brilliant figure and passionate features with classical spirits, especially in the upper period of his creation, when his piano works reflect the feature of classicalism more obviously. Piano suite is just one piece of the typical works in this period. This work expresses eulogy to Couperin and French music in the whole 18th century. With close connection with tradition as well as innovation, this work is involved in modern composition techniques.In order to analyze the reflected classical spirit in Ravel'works, Le Tombeau de Couperin is selected in this thesis as the subject of research and two points of view, the features of composition and performance, are dissected. This thesis firstly introduces Ravel's life and music style, which lays the foundation for composition of Le Tombeau de Couperin.
