David Lodge is a world-famous English novelist, literary critic, and editor. His novels are popular among many people including common readers, intellectuals and critic for their humorous and witty words, interesting conception, flexible application of many new and traditional techniques. This thesis, which is based on Lodge's main works, is divided into three parts to analyze the comedy style and characteristic of appealing to both refined and popular tastes: As an English and American literature professor and critic, Lodge studied the Russian formalism literature theories, especially Bakhtin's poetics theories, which inevitably influenced his works. Lodge's some novels such as Small World: An Academic Romance and The British Museum Is Falling Down, have distinct comedy features of carnival and polyphony, so that they are full of carnival atmosphere. The novels often adopt parallel comedy structures. Comic characters in his novels are out of harmony because of the inconsistency in their appearance and essence. The language in his works is very humorous and witty. The author is good at strengthening language feature and improving the comedy and interest of the works by applying humorous situations and witty conversation. In addition, the author makes use of the techniques which are often used in realism novels, detective novels, Gothic novels, romance and so on, combining parody and irony masterly. The combination and application of many techniques greatly improve the comics of Lodge's novels, which makes his works appeal to both refined and popular tastes.
