Humor is everywhere in our daily life. The study of humor has already become a special and independent discipline. Since the 1950s, the world has witnessed great changes in the field of linguistics. The study of linguistics has turned to the meaning aspect of languages with semantics, cultural linguistics, and pragmatics arising and developing into important branches of linguistics. The newly advanced theories of pragmatics now sharpen our eyes and widen our horizon in humor studies. This thesis, based on the relevance theory (RT) proposed by Sperber and Wilson, attempts to investigate the mechanisms of laugh-producing, cognitive understanding processes, deep indications, and contextual factors which affect humor comprehension from the perspective of cognitive pragmatics. The conclusion is made in the end, that is, the relevant theory plays such an important and effective role in analyzing humor producing mechanism that helps us understand English humor better.
