From the civil war to the early 20th century, the United States had experienced social transition from the traditionally agricultural society to a modernly industrial society. During this period, the the social thoughts in the United States had experienced from the laissez-faire to the of national interventionist. To the late 19th century, , the laissez-faire became the mainstream thoughts in the American society for the influence of historical tradition of individualism and liberalism and the currently social-political economic factors, the laissez-faire thoughts performed the individualism values, thesocial Darwinism philosophical ideas, economic freedom law in theory, the social-economic policy of the governmental laissez-faire in practice. Its main features are : defending their personal interests strongly and advocating individual freedom and opposing state intervention, and resisting any changes. Laissez-faire thoughts in the "gold era" not only contributed to the rapid development of the U.S. economy, but brought serious social, political and economic issues. As transforming from the traditionally agricultural society to a modernly industrial society, United States needed to solve the serious social-political and economic issues, stabled the bourgeois rule, asked the government to expand the scope of its functions, intervented social-political and economic life. In the late 19th century and the early 20th century, the of national interventionist thoughts had emerged, and become the mainstream of social thoughts. National interventionist thoughts performed the theory of state functions and the nationalism social values in theory, and the government regulating the social-political and economic life in practice under the guidance of the national interventionist theories. Thus, the rise of state interventionist thoughts established a solid theoretical base of the comprehensive changes in the American society of early 20th century.
