In recent years, contrastive linguistics has developed quickly. But the comparative study on the imperatives in different languages has not attracted many researchers and the achievements are not very satisfactory. Thus, this thesis is to make an in-deep comparative study on the English and Korean imperatives. With the achievements of contrastive linguistics as the theoretical basis, this thesis not only contributes to explore and account for the reasons of the similarities and differences of the imperative construction in both languages within the syntactic deep structure, but also compares the two language structures at the sentence level. During the process of the comparative study, this thesis will make a full use of the general theories of comparative linguistics, structuralism and Chomsky's T-G grammar. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate some theoretical points concerning the syntactic and semantic structure of Imperative construction through comparative study between English and Korean. Imperative sentences are formally distinguishable from other sentence types. This thesis mainly concentrates on (1) the syntactic status and interpretation of Imperative subject, (2) semantic features of Imperative predicate, and (3) the underlying Imperative morpheme IMP, and (4) Negative markers in the Negative Imperatives. By doing this, the author aims to identify universal morphsyntactic principles of imperatives and explain variations in English and Korean. This paper is devoted to an overall understanding of this structure. The content of this thesis focuses on the following aspects.Chapter One is the introduction. It confirms the scope of research, and briefly introduces the previous study, and then defines the method, the aim, and the significance of this research. In Chapter Two, the author points out the similarities and differences existing in surface structure between English and Korean imperatives, and also define types of imperatives studied in this thesis. In Chapter Three, the author tries to investigate the syntactic status and interpretation of subjects in English and Korean Imperatives. Chomsky's GB Theory is uttered here to prove that though imperative subject does not present in the surface structure, it exists in the deep structure and has the same syntactic and semantic functions as explicit subject existing in the surface structure. Based on the idea that there are 4 kinds of empty categories: NP-trace, Wh-trace, PRO and pro, the thesis...
