As an important kind of literary phenomenon, Luo Di Poetry (here refers to the poetry written by scholars who failed in the imperial exams in Tang Dynasty) came into being in Tang Dynasty, and existed throughout the special period. The society was on the decline and the imperial exams were very unfair in Late Tang Dynasty. Many people attended the imperial exams, but failed. We can say a majority of Luo Di Poetry were written in Late Tang Dynasty. Among the 48900 poems in the famous book Complete Tang Poetry , there are about 510 Luo Di Poetry written by the scholars who failed in the imperial exams, with 118 of them contain the words"Luo Di","Xia Di"in their names. This clearly shows that Luo Di Poetry enjoys a great significance and plays an indispensable role in the treasury of Complete Tang Poetry. So far, nobody has made a comprehensive and systematic research on Luo Di Poetry as an independent whole.This article probes into the mentality of scholars of Late Tang Dynasty and the poetry written after their future in imperial exams under the background of Late Tang Dynasty.In the preface, the author defines the concept of Luo Di Poetry and presents the brief literature review, the research method and the significance of the study.The 2nd chapter expatiates on the origin and the development of the system of Tang Dynasty imperial exams, and then analyzes the related data and historial materials of Luo Di Poetry.The 3rd chapter concentrates on the cultural and political background of Luo Di Poetry and the cultural mentality reflected in the special period, then the autor makes a contrastive analysis of Luo Di Poetry written in Late Tang Dynasty with that in Early Tang Dynasty.The 4th chapter deals with the main kinds of those poets'emotions, i.e, the sense of frustration and shame, the resentful and sentimental feelings, the homesickness, the expectation and vista of the future ,the sense of disappointment and the intention of being a recluse.The 5th chapter mainly explores the artistic styles of Luo Di Poetry from the following aspects: the use of imagism, the use of allusion and metaphor, the linguistic style and the general style and features.The last part makes a conclusion of Luo Di Poetry, and synthesizes the value and significance of Luo Di Poetry.
