A Study About The Protestant Church In South Fukien In Modern Times

Early in 1842, the Reformed (Ducth) Church in America had sent missionaries to Amoy to propagate the Gospel, norminally under the dispatch of the A.B.C.F.M. Then other societies like the London Missionary Society, the English Presbyterian Church and so on went here too to develop the church mission. Along the Minnan's geography and river traffic net, they finally set up the missionary cause in and around the districts of Amoy (Xiamen), i.e. Minnan or South Fukien (Fujian province), by establishing and extending protestant churches at the towns near rivers. This is the Minnan Mission's "Spread Pattern along The River Net". This paper tries to recur the Minnan Mission in modernized 1history, including the missionary cause, the secular projects, the church's syncretism, the cooperation and conflict among the missions , and the interaction between the missionaries and Minnan society. Throughout this paper, we can find our the characteristics of the Minnan Mission, understanding that the mission had objectively promoted the modernized course for Minnan society.
