D. H. Lawrence is one of the most significant modernist writers in early twentieth century. This thesis intends to probe into the modernistic features embodied in one of Lawrence's long novels, Women in Love, which is considered as his masterpiece and one of the undoubted classics of modernistic literature. The paper is aimed to acquire a deeper understanding of Lawrence's modernist concept and to demonstrate that D. H. Lawrence is a pioneer and also a master in creating modernistic works, for in this novel many modernistic techniques are employed, which accounts for the difficulties in reading it. The modernistic features this thesis generalizes can be classified into two categories: one is embodied in the modernistic themes such as the relationship between men and women, industrialization and alienation of human character; and the other is demonstrated through modernistic writing techniques of the novel such as the unique portrayal of characters, the unique concept of structure, and symbolism.
