English teaching in secondary vocational schools is faced with many challenges. For example, the requirements on students who graduate from secondary vocational schools are higher than before; English level of the students in a secondary vocational school is inclined to decrease. So a good theory is urgently needed to improve English teaching in secondary vocational schools.Second language learning strategy theory is an important theory of second language acquisition. It is generally agreed that second language learning strategy research began in 1970s (Wen in Cohen, 2000:F11).It has been around for decades. Second language learning strategy research in China began in 1980s. Compared with learning strategies research abroad, domestic learning strategies research mainly pays attention to college students'learning strategies. With the development of learning strategy research in our country, some people begin to pay attention to middle school students'learning strategies research. However, very few people pay attention to vocational school students'learning strategies. In fact, secondary vocational school students have more problems in English learning, including learning strategies use. Learning strategy research mainly concentrates on helping learners to develop good learning strategies and improve their learning efficiency and achievements. So learning strategy theory is more valuable and practical for English teaching and learning in secondary vocational schools.The present study is to investigate the grade one students' learning strategies in a secondary vocational school to find out some solutions to the problems existing in these students' English learning.The present study was conducted with 119 subjects in a secondary vocational school. It consists of both quantitative and qualitative methods by conducting a questionnaire, a test, and an interview. In the first phase, a questionnaire was designed. The questionnaire was used to investigate the grade one students' learning strategies use situation. The results were analyzed and processed with the SPSS13.0.
