As we know, China's political documents play an important role in the economic, political, cultural and diplomatic spheres in China. Therefore, the translator of the English version should have a good command of the relevant translation techniques. With these in mind, the author of this paper focuses on the study of the translation of Chinese political writings from the prospective of the domestication and foreignization theory. She argues that whether the translation is good depends on the adopting of the proper translation strategy.To make the thesis more persuasive, all the examples are selected from the full text of The Report on the Work of the Government of 2005, delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao at the National People's Congress. In order to highlight the theme of the thesis, the author has tried to revise some published versions and offered the reasons for her proposed versions.The thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One is concerned with translation theories. The other chapters are on integrating translation theories with translation practice. In Sections 1.1 and 1.2 of Chapter One, the author gives a brief survey of the traditional Chinese theories and western theories, with a special focus on the domestication and foriegnization theories. In Section 1.3 of Chapter One, the author offers a literature review of domestication and foreignization and further discusses their application in the translation of political documents. The author picked all the translation examples by herself from the English version of The Report on the Work of the Government of 2005. While analyzing the sentences, she offers her alternative translations from time to time and introduces new translation techniques.The rest part, which focuses on how to integrate domestication and foreignization theories with translation practices, is the main part of this thesis. The author mainly discusses which strategy should be adopted in document translation at the following levels: the lexical, syntactical, discourse and semantic levels. At the lexical level, the emphasis is on the translation of Chinese category words, collocations, empty words, etc. At the syntactic level, the author dwells on the choices...
