The Change Of Image Of The Other In Chinese-Malaysian Novels

Living in Malaysia, a country consist of various races, narrative of "the other" inevitably becomes one of the important topics of the Chinese-Malaysian novels. As the offspring of immigrants from China, the Chinese-Malaysian writers describing "the other" in their novels that has in essentially embodied their desire to construct self-identity and their rethinking about their plight for existing in Malaysia .My thesis tends to analyze the narrative tactics of the Chinese-Malaysian writers and the change of their mind.The change of narrative tactics and technique for "the other" has experienced a complexprocess, which embraces three stages -----from "taking prejudice against the other" to "regardingthe other the same as ourselves "and at last to" discovering the other are 'other' ".The change of their writing tactics and narrating techniques owning to the changeChinese-Malaysians' notion------ being forced to live in this country and finallyaccept by the country which their live in. Image of "the other " ,as a mirror , its change has mirrored the change of the attitude of Chinese-Malaysian towards the landwhich they put their foot on ------from feeling strange an frightened and avoidingfrom "the other" at first to observing and thinking it seriously then and to finally embracing it and actively and passionately .Image, as just a kind of imagination in essence, can mirror the complex mind of the viewer, form the change of the image of "the other", we can know deeply about the notion of Chinese-Malaysia and their strong determination as well as will with which they can reconstruct "self-identity" and gain trust from the main-steam society to be "son of the land".
