The Representation And Application Of Traditional Design In Modern Jewelry

At present, jewelry industry is rapidly developing in China. However, the problem of similarity among jewelries is serious, which has become a bottleneck to the development of jewelry in our country. When we absorb foreign culture, merging national features and creating national jewelries with oriental characteristics is a necessary trend. One important solution to this problem is to bring typical features of our traditional design into modern jewelries.In this paper, by investigating representation and application of traditional design in modern jewelry, the author discusses how to design jewelry locally in the background of globalization and how to find an effective way of modern jewelry designing, which will be helpful for designing jewelry with Chinese tradition and conform to modern belief, taste, culture and value.At first, the meaning and category of Chinese traditional pattern (include folk pattern) are defined, and the characteristics of traditional pattern in each period are summarized by analyzing the development of traditional pattern. Then, after analyzing examples, representation and application of traditional design in modern jewelry are elaborated, and some work has been designed and produced by the author. The material and technical representation of traditional pattern are also discussed.The following conclusions are obtained:1. The traditional pattern is the treasure of our culture. As the time goes on, traditional patterns exhibit its particular national fascination. Based on the Chinese profound traditional culture, Chinese jewelry design will have a wide development space by designing with traditional patterns.2. The representation and application of traditional design in jewelry includes dermatoglyphic pattern, sculpt, color, meaning and aesthetic characters. Understanding the national culture, relating with current time, designing closely with traditional pattern, is very important for a designer to create modern and national jewelry and strengthen the civilization and vogue.3. Material and techniques are significant for modern competition. The material and techniques of traditional pattern is less restricted, so traditional, modern and fascine material and techniques could be tried to be employed.
