This paper intends to explore the key issues related to teaching Asian overseas students listening in the"Basic English"course so that a pedagogical approach for teaching listening in this course can be developed to serve the learning needs and requirements of the students. At present, there are more and more Asian overseas students in China who came for learning Chinese, while English courses are in their curriculum design."Basic English"course is a course specially built by University of International Business and Economics for these Asian overseas students. During the building of this course the following key issues have been addressed and some conclusive results have been made. The five key issues are: 1) an overview on teaching approaches of listening and three models of listening process; 2) a research into the students'English listening abilities; 3) an inquiry into student's general learning needs; 4) a research on student's learning styles; 5) a research on student's learning strategies. Based on the above research tests, two results have been reached: 1) A communicative-centered integrated teaching approach is most suitable for our students, 2) An effective and integrative teaching plan for listening in"Basic English"course is worked out.I would like to share my experiences with others in pedagogical studies of teaching Asian overseas students listening. It is a contribution to listening teaching theories since the issue of teaching L3 in L2 has been explored by investigating the students'characteristics, learning needs and etc. Moreover, a uniformed teaching and pedagogical approach is developed and will help both overseas students learning English and their teachers.
