English Customs System In The Middle Ages

Customs generated and developed into a key revenue of England in late Medieval, which was much impacted by the economy and politics of Medieval England. Thus, the research of customs system of Medieval England can help us have more comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of economic and political development of that time.This thesis mainly discuss the organization, the development and the management system of customs , based on the medieval English politics and economy . By this research , we try to construct a complete medieval English customs system .The main view of this thesis and research results are as follows:1 .Have carried on the theory discussion to the origin of English customs. This text makes great efforts to set up on forefathers' research results, especially Hull and Gras. Hall's theory was prise theory. Gras disgreed with him ,he thought customs origined from money due. In the part one we summary of the two kinds of theories and propose my own thinking combinating historical facts.2.Development of the medieval English customs.The affirmation of the ancient custom in 1275, marked the establishment of the national customs. Later the national customs experienced three development stages:the new custom,cloth custom and the subsidies.They constructed a complete system in late medieval England. Every custom is a new stage,is a result of the strugglement of the King and parliament .In the part two ,we discuss the development of customs system detailed.3.Management system of medieval English customs. With the development of customs, its management system is approaching perfection day by day . In order to control customs, English government strengthens management from four sides: establishing customhouse ,making a criterion customs receiving procedure , auditing the customs, and establishing the staple. After taking these measures .English government enhanced customs management.Lastly, we summarize the characteristic of medieval English customs system and advance my own opinion about how medieval English customs system impacts the modern customs system.
