National spirit is the soul of constructing harmonious society as well as the ideological prop for national development and survival. Under the situation of globalization and pluralistic culture, one of the important tasks for the construction of socialist culture is to cultivate and carry forward the great national spirit in China. The key to modernization is the role of human beings. One of the essentials for the modernization of humanities is the development of humanistic spirit because the lack of inspiring national spirit and excellent humanistic qualities will lead to the complete failure of modernization.The construction of national spirit is characterized by accumulativeness and open-endedness.National spirit is originated from the development of national history. That is the reason why it has the tendency to be taken as the "gene" for the development of national culture. Chinese national spirit is rooted in its excellent conventional culture, the core and mainstream of which is Confucian ideology. Confucian doctrines have great influence on the formation and development of Chinese national spirit. Confucianism is a theoretical system consisting of humanitarian culture achieved through harmony-driven pursuit, political culture with benevolence, righteousness and rituals as the core, and the lording culture with internal cultivation and extensional power over the whole society as its principles. Because of its special thoughts on the understanding of life, its humanistic spirit is very extensive and expansive. This is confirmed by these aspects such as the ultimate attention to the praise of life and benevolence, great concern over the individual responsibility for the whole society, the collective spirit of unification as wholeness, the moral conduct characterized by the personal cultivation to bring peace to the others and the supreme role of righteousness, the pursuit of perfect personality featured with the cultivation of internal sagacity to bring its extensive power into fuller play, the personal practice to make unceasing efforts to improve oneself, the human centered idea that Heaven and Earth are one, not two, and the harmonious unity of heaven and humanity.
