Emotional Metaphor And Metonymy In Chinese Characters With The Radical Of "Heart"

This paper is based on metaphor and metonymy theory of Cognitive Linguistics, takes Chinese characters with the radical of "heart" in The Three Hundred Tang Poems as the research focus, and analyzes the underlying metaphors and metonymies of "xin" in those characters.This paper reviews the history of metaphor and metonymy study in the west and in China, introduces the cognitive approach to metaphor and metonymy study, and sets up the cognitive model on this basis. This research also takes into account context, which is further divided into word context, phrasal context and sentential context.The present paper firstly analyzes the underlying emotional metaphors and metonymies of "xin" in Chinese characters with the radical of heart. After this, the paper reanalyzed those characters in context, and investigates the roles context plays in the linguistic realizations of the metaphors and metonymies.Results show that Chinese characters with the radical of "heart" realize the emotional metaphors and metonymies of "xin" and same emotional metaphors and metonymies can appear in different characters. Moreover, metonymy is more frequently used in the formation of Chinese characters than metaphor is. The realization of the underlying emotional metaphors and metonymies in the characters is influenced by context.This paper investigates Chinese characters with the radical of "heart", testifies the relevant metaphor and metonymy theory in Cognitive Linguistics and adds Chinese data in the metaphor and metonymy study. In addition, this paper is also conducive to later studies on Chinese language.
