As an absolute gem of Chinese literary works, "Hung Lou Meng" has aroused academic or personal interests of scholars at home and abroad. In order to let people from other cultures share this Chinese literary treasure, scholars like Bencraft Joly, Wang Jizhen, David Hawkes, Bonsall and Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang have devoted themselves to the translation of this great works. It is found that both in Hawkes' translation of "Hung Lou Meng" and in H. Bencraft Joly's translation version, the most frequently-employed translation strategy, or translation phenomenon, is pragmatic enrichment, which means to specify the unclearly-stated elements, to add some situational or cultural information and to explicate the hidden logical relations or meanings and whose function is to bridge the linguistic and cultural differences of the two languages and facilitate the target readers' understanding.In this thesis, both quantitative and qualitative data were provided to compare the usage of pragmatic enrichment in the two translation versions of "Hung Lou Meng" from the perspective of communicative translation in order to find the most appropriate answer to when and how to pragmatically enrich in the Chinese-English literary translation.Though both Joly's and Hawkes' are somewhat communicative, the forms and types of pragmatic enrichment in these two versions are very much different. In this thesis, descriptive method is used to compare the forms of pragmatic enrichment in these two versions. Under the guidance of his translation aim of "affording a helping hand for present and future students of Chinese studies" as Joly wrote in the preface to his translation, Joly tried his best to preserve the form of the original form on one hand and on the other tried to transfer as much meaning as possible to facilitate the readers' understanding. Through quantitative analysis of 10 chapters randomly selected from the 56 chapters translated by Joly, it is found that in Joly's translation almost all the pragmatic enrichment is presented in the form of brackets. All places of pragmatic enrichment in Joly's translation are picked out and given detailed description of the form of pragmatic enrichment. It is found that there are 4 types of pragmatic enrichment in Joly's translation. As regards Hawkes' translation, the form of pragmatic enrichment is relatively more complex than that in Joly's version.
