| Accompanying frequent contacts between China and other countries, more and more loanwords enter into the Chinese language. The study of loanword translation, on the one hand, can provide a theoretical guidance for loanword translation practice and reference materials for study of lexicology and anthropology, and contribute a lot to standardization of modern Chinese lexicon system. However, it has been an ignored field for a long time.Based on a research on the situation of loanword translation in China nowadays, the author puts forward the point of view that Grice's classical pragmatics theory—the Conversational Cooperative Principle and its four Maxims (the Maxims of Quality, Quantity, Manner, and Relevance) should be applied to guide loanword translation. In this paper, a quality-analysis and theory-deduction method is employed. By analyzing the nature and features of loanword translation, the author puts forward that loanword translation is an interlingual and cross-culture communication activity, the features of which rationalize the application of Cooperative Principle in it.In the second half of the paper, the author expatiates upon application of the four Maxims in loanword translation from different perspectives, illustrating with more than 100 translation examples. Four guidelines for loanword translation are deducted from the application of the four Maxims. From application of the Maxim of Quality, guideline "Be Truthful" is deducted; from application of the Maxim of Quantity, guideline "Be Informative"; from application of the Maxim of Manner, guideline "Be Assimilable"; from application of the Maxim of Relevance, guideline "Be Relevant". |
