Zhang Taiyan, was a scholar and revolutionary in the last reign of Qing Dynasty and the primary stage of Republic of China, whose most important and splendid time was the academic course from 1897 to 1910. After the Revolution of 1911, the middle-aged Zhang Taiyan seldom participated in political activities directly, while he laid particular emphasis on the dissemination and instruction of the traditional academy. Meanwhile, his thought of culture politics changed with the disappearance of political intensity and the retirement of his matchs with whom he used to discuss learning and politics. Basing on Qiu shu and Guo gu lun heng, Zhang's representative works from 1897 to 1910, the thesis launchs out into an analysis of his thought of culture politics at that period. The fomer research, neglecting the cultural ecology, paid much more attention to the exegesis of his thought from the perspective of his concept history. That's why the thesis elaborates Zhang's thought of culture politics within his daily life and cultural ecology, by with manifests Zhang's concrete way of launching the discussion between the Chinese and Western cultures in a complex and changeable cultural ecology.The thesis is composed of two parts.From the rhetoric angle of Qiu shu, the first part explores Zhang's qualities as a Confucian scholar which based on his cultural position within nationalism, as well as the cultural ecology background of his writing style. A quite impotant aspect of Zhang's thought of culture politics was his independent moral character and the intellectual criticism to which he paid a continuous attention. What Zhang Taiyan had expressed in the rhetoric of Qiu shu and intellectual criticism was exactly the plentiful ways, by which the culture coped with the concrete historical circumstance. Viewed from the rhetoric, Zhang didn't pay a full attention to the populace as a political concept.
