Since the May 4th Movements (1919), the 30-year Chinese modern literature has become extraordinary splendid and varied. Its every change and advance is linked closely with the social changes which took place in China at that time. Contrarily, the historic alterations have enriched the forms of modern literature. It is the main content that modern literature shows. And it also affects the outlook of modern literature profoundly."The cultural city of GuiLin", which appeared in the flames of war in 1938, is an indispensable part of the development of modern literature.In 1938, the flames of Anti-Japanese War burned all over the country. Most of the territory was occupied by the enemy. Most of the territory was occupied by the enemy successively. Because of politics, economy, military, culture and so on, numbers of intellectuals, who came to the south across water, gathered in GuiLin. At the same time, all kinds of printed culture and cultural groups came to GuiLin with the migrant of people. In a twinkling, this lonely city with beautiful mountains and rivers became noisy and prosperous.There was mature"City culture"in"May 4th"new culture in 1930s; Shanghai and Beijing are the typical representatives. However, Comparing to the impetuosity and tumult of shanghai and the peace and solemn ness of Beijing,"The cultural city of GuiLin", which took form because of the flames of the war, is not classified as"City culture". It centrally reflects the relationship and characteristic between culture and politics, national salvation.The assembly of the famous literary men is naturally its outstanding characteristic. Human being's activities are an important factor which constitutes the"city", GuiLin in 1938 was still under the control of warlords of Cui. However the contradictions between the warlords of Cui and the clique of Jiang Jieshi, formed a special and relatively loose Circumstance. The literary men could took activities freely in this"Cultural place", which was under the rule .During this period of time, the books, newspapers and migraines which were published in GuiLin occupied over two thirds of the national circulation. The activities of many kinds of the cultural groups are an exceptionally grand occasion. In the spring of 1944, the first Opera Exhibition in Xi'an pushed it to the climax, which had been a symbolic activity.
