Moll Flanders (1722) is regarded as signifying the top of the literature career of Daniel Defoe (1660-1731). In this novel, Defoe creates the most brilliant andsparkling woman in the 18th European fiction (A. Walter, 1962: 42)------thecharacter of Moll Flanders. This thesis tries to probe into how the narrator's human nature experienced in society during her course of wandering life so as to betterunderstand Defoe's advancements in thought------his being the first to take a poorwoman living in the bottom of the society as the subject of his novel to expose the backwardness and the darkness of his society and to cry out for women's right of survival in society. It also shows Defoe's reflection upon his society and his love and compassion in view of a writer. The thesis also attempts to study how Defoe blends religion into the life of his heroine which possesses lots of unique aesthetic value so that we can comprehend vividly the relation between religion and literature. It also analyses the narrative arts in the novel to understand better Defoe's realism in his fictional creation and his truthfulness in his narration.
