Pearl S. Buck, as a controversial American writer, has written many literary works which give detailed descriptions of human nature and represent the author as a real humanitarian. The author of this thesis tries to demonstrate Pearl S. Buck as a humanitarian via her representative works such as The Good Earth, Pavilion of Women and East Wind: West Wind.In the first chapter, the author of this thesis discusses the formation of Pearl S. Buck's humanitarianism from the influence of her parents, of her education and marriage life, of Chinese culture as well as the influence of Charles Dickens. In the second and third chapters, the author analyzes both female and male characters in Pearl S. Buck's literary works which give us a holistic viewpoint of both sexes. Then, in the conclusion, the author mentions Pearl S. Buck's concerns for children especially the retarded children, gives a brief summary of the whole thesis and puts forward the realistic meaning of studying Pearl S. Buck as a humanitarian.
