This paper is materially based on the commentary on FIFA World Cup 2006, and theoretically on the commentary theory. It tries to explore the means and stance of language appraisal on particular occasions. Language appraisal is a general term representing addresser's attitude, opinion and emotion, from which stand are not directly available, only by carefully analyzing the meaning can stand be got. Different methods should be applied to different language use, among which there are similarities towards language appraisal, complimenting, criticizing and the like. Even if methods are similar, analysis should be carried out in different contexts to get the commentator's stand. Through the study and analysis of the immediate comments on the football matches, I think the manifestation of language appraisal can be both pragmatic and textual. Particular language appraisal can be done by analyzing different methods, mainly by comparing to represent different stands. However, overall appraisal is comparatively easy to get. There are various means of language appraisal, representing the concerned information the commentator delivers, his personal inclination and stance, meanwhile this language evaluation are closely related to football culture. Owing to different methods, particular characteristics of football culture, comments on players, coach, team and fans represent cultural characteristics of football subject, appraisal of football object is characteristics of football culture attached football subject.Stand of match commentary itself is part of football culture and a representation of football culture, while there is still controversy concerned whether there is stand or not. Over-all analysis of this particular language use provides plenty of case studies towards dynamic language research in the field of language application.
