A Study On The Traditional Morality Of Walter·Scott's History Novels

Walter-Scott was named of "The Father of The History Fiction". In the history of the English fiction, he is the most important novelist in the 19th century, and also the real inaugurator of the English novel in 19th. If the 20th century western literature is regard to have experienced modernism, existentialism and postmodernism in accordance with the development of the society, the "absurdity" has its spiritual direction of the 20th century western literature .and become peculiar mark literature , the absurdity's implication and expression do not agree with each other. He had been made the appreciation from critics and readers on the combination of the history and novel. But, as been entering the 20th century, the study of Scott had been colder and colder. Maybe it's the excessively traditional brand unsuit the atmosphere culture and the mode of thought. But, today ,we reread the novel, we can find where the real value is. Comparing with its original sense, the concept has a much wider connotation and denotation in 20th century. Walter-Scott turn his love of his nation and people into the traditional morality manifestation and convey, by the means of writing history novels. He is trying to make his nation and people can display profound and admirable. And also trying to set up a last barrier for the vanishing traditional fort. Traditional morality is the basic leitmotiv of all his novel, the plot and character were work for that. Today ,we should study the morality value of the Scott's novel. In an attempt to reveal the reason and the significance of the rebuilding of traditional morality, this thesis begins with the analysing of the ideas of Scott's history novel, and the manifestation of the traditional morality in his book.
