| Vocabulary is one of the three elements of a language, which plays an important part in language teaching and learning. The linguist David Wilskin (1972) summed up the importance of vocabulary and emphasized that without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed. All English language teachers and learners know well that learning English involves the acquisition of a large number of words. But when facing with so many unknown words, people often feel confused and boring. Teachers also want to find out some effective methods to teach vocabulary well. So it is important to teach students some useful vocabulary knowledge and teach them how to use it in vocabulary learning. Therefore, I would like to discuss and study the English vocabulary in the thesis hoping that some effective methods can be found for vocabulary teaching and learning. The paper is to study the English vocabulary from the perspective of lexicology with the applications of word-formation and lexical cohesion in context hoping that it will be practical and efficient in the practice of vocabulary teaching and learning. The paper will study the reasons and background for the development of English vocabulary by analyzing a great number of words. I hope the paper can be practical to make learners have thorough and clear understanding of word-formation theory as well as lexical cohesion in context. I also hope it can stimulate English learners' interest in English vocabulary and help them to enlarge vocabulary and flexibly make use of vocabulary. The paper attempts to provide an exploration of vocabulary from the following six chapters. The first part is the general introduction of the developmental trend and purpose of the research on English vocabulary. In chapter two, it's the theoretical study of vocabulary, its' content includes morpheme, affix, root, word, vocabulary, and the significance and aim of the research on vocabulary. In chapter three, a comprehensive study based on the research background and the reasons for the change of English vocabulary is conducted. Chapter four is put forward to reveal the rules governing the formation of English vocabulary. Three major methods about vocabulary formation are discussed. Chapter five focuses on the context and lexical cohesion, and respective function of them. In chapter six, after careful study of these individual examples of English vocabulary, the powerful and useful methods are found out to help English vocabulary teaching and learning based on the related knowledge and theories of lexicology. |
