The study on Ci in the Republic of China( RC) covers the achievements made in feudal times as well as the new thoughts. In addition, the newly unearthed documents in Dunhuang have being transformed the traditional views. Moreover, the achievements by scholars in the Republic of China are reflected in their great amount of historical works. At the beginning of the new century appears the trend of revising the study on Ci of 20th century. owing to the broad coverage, the revision is lack of the thorough and concrete summary to the works of Ci in the Republic of China. Pinpointing at this, the thesis targets at the position of the study on Ci in the Republic of China together with the trend and change of the whole study of Ci by summarizing and contrasting with the achievements made in the Republic of China. The study on Ci in the Republic of China contains various topics such as etymology, writers, styles, different groups of doctrines, the distinction between Shi and Ci and the comparison of Ci in Southern and Northern Song Dynasties, etc. Due to the limitation of time, the thesis only chooses the originality of Ci, the distinction between Shi and Ci and the comparison of Ci in Southern and Northern Song Dynasties which are easy to be connected together as the topics of the thesis. The thesis includes prelude, the views on etymology, the distinction between Shi and Ci, the comparison of Ci in Southern and Northern Song Dynasties and conclusion. The prelude expounds the intention of the study and the achievements made up to now. Chapter one involves the originality of Ci. There existed the different views on Ci among the prior researchers. The researchers in the Republic of China perceived Ci from the angle of music and resulted in the predominant position of the originality in Sui and Tang Dynasties. Though the views on the etymology are discrepant in RC resulting from the various judgements to the true or false Ci, they are more believable on the whole, especially the view of folk originality deeply affects the contemporary scholars. Chapter two deals with the distinction between Shi and Ci. The ancient scholars'distinction covered a broad scope while the scholars in RC only probed into the two fields of function and form. Their opinions of functions of Ci ushered in the knowledge of the field. Moreover, they penetrated into the further study involved with the type, title, sentence pattern, rhyme as well as artistic devices. Chapter three is the comparison of Ci in Southern and Northern Song Dynasties. The ancient scholars'comparisons contained the subjective and arbitrary factors. Furthermore, they even attempted to correct the different views at that time. In RC, the study and creation of Ci were gradually divided. the scholars came to hold objective opinions of Ci in Southern and Northern Song Dynasties. They would rather compare their differences than qualities; moreover, they delivered more thorough analysis on the aspect. The conclusion considers that in RC, people ceased to perceive Ci as trifles. The scholars could objectively and justly study it as a cultural relic. With the change of the views of the world, the advancement of the research methods and the utilization of the unearthed documents, the scholars in RC had made more objective acknowledgements to Ci. Their courage of breaking the traditional authorities, dexterous considerations and academic opinions deeply affected the later researches.
