As the increasing concern about the inheritance of Chinese traditional music culture in general music education system, this qualitative research focuses on Kunqu teaching practice carried out by Zhang Weidong, a Kunqu actor in Northern Kunqu Troop in Beijing. He have endeavoured to popularize Kunqu through teaching in schools and other places since 1989, and have fostered the interest in Kunqu among thousands people of different ages, especially the young. His teaching practice is the typical case of individual effort for the inheritance of Kunqu, also a fine example of the Chinese traditional music pedagogy.The purpose of this paper is to highlight the significance of Chinese traditional music teaching concepts and pedagogy through the research on Zhang Weidong. Based on investigation on Zhang's learning experience and more than tow-year participate observation on the Kunqu class in China Conservatory and follow-up interview for data collecting, with the in-depth description of his class teaching and individual teaching. This paper reveals his teaching methods 1) Potential environmental influence, Imitation, Learning, Practice and Reflection 2) Circulating teaching 3) Group learning 4) Oral and teacher-as example teaching, tow principles for Kunqu protection1) Inheritance 2)Original style, and music education concepts 1) Fostering music teachers with high quality2) Integrating the music with daily life; 3) Teaching kunqu under the background of Chinese culture as a whole. 5)Emphasizing both music skills and moral growth. His teaching practice well demonstrates the traditional Chinese music education ideology which Attaches great importance on the integration of art, life, personality and group harmony, brining inspirations to music teachers in traditional music teaching.
