The systemic-functional grammar has been developing by leaps and bounds in recent years and has been widely applied in the literary and non-literary fields. This thesis applies the functional stylistics to the practical analysis of the children's narration in The Catcher in the Rye, in order to analyze J. D. Salinger's successful elaboration of the themes, reveal the aesthetic effects of the children's narration in the novel and establish some intersection and mutual complementarities between linguistics and literature. This thesis analyzes the problem from three aspects of the children's narration: the narrative perspective, structure and language. The related theories were applied to analysis of the linguistic material in the novel, and these materials, in return, can prove and enrich these theories. The specific narrative focalization can achieve certain functions such as defamiliarization and deterritorialization and contributed a lot to the theme. The narrative structure is linear, in chronological order. This thesis duly comes to a conclusion that the specific language is a counter culture language based on the analysis of the rich linguistic material from the novel. The formation of the unique style of Salinger and the success of the novel was closely related with the employment of the children's narration.
