The present study, which adopts Critical Discourse Analysis, the Cooperative Principle and the Principle of Goal Analysis as its analytic approaches, analyzes Saddam Hussein's courtroom responses in his trial (from October 19, 2005 to December 31, 2006). The author analyzes the forms of Saddam Hussein's courtroom responses from the perspective of lexical classification, personal pronouns and modality, and points out how Saddam Hussein uses linguistic strategies to reach his political goals. In this study, the author combines Critical Discourse Analysis with forensic linguistics, which broadens the relevant studies. She analyzes various linguistic strategies and their roles in Saddam's courtroom responses, which aims at improving people's critical language awareness. It is hoped that this study will provide some reference to the Chinese legal personnel. This thesis may be used for reference in English teaching. It is suggested that the related knowledge of law English and forensic linguistics should be introduced to the English-major students.
